The site is sacred and used to be home to royalty and a place of refuge for those who broke an ancient Hawaiin law, or “kapu.” The site is self-guided and visitors can learn more about this ancient place of refuge.

Panaewa Rainforest Zoo, Big Island

Visit the only tropical zoo located in the United States in Big Island, Hawaii. Panaewa Rainforest Zoo is full of interesting and unique animals to see, including a white Bengal tiger, spider monkeys, lemurs, nene geese, and over 80 other animal species. Also available at the zoo is a beautiful botanical garden covered in a variety of amazing plant species. Admission is free, so don’t skip this wonderful attraction during your Hawaiian vacation.
