Scuba Diving: Rules Now Allowing Kids to Dive In

Let’s face it; there are some of us out there who could be considered pretty irresponsible, even as adults. So, with this attitude, one might worry that giving every adult the OK to learn to scuba dive is concerning. Hopefully those who take the plunge are mature enough to realize that scuba diving can be hazardous business if you don’t know what you’re doing. Recently, the minimum age for a diver has been dropped. At first, it’s an alarming fact, but the reasoning behind it gives it a little more logic.

First, let’s look at the old rule vs. the new rule. Originally, a diver was required to be at least 12 or older in to qualify for junior certification. The new rule declares that children 10 and older are now eligible for junior certification. The only organizations that are going by the old, standard rule are the YMCA and the NAUI for the time being.
